Steel mill maintenance is constrained by hot dust, abrasive slag, and assets too heavy or too hot for a conventional weld repair. Choosing the system

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) is the workhorse for bearing housings, casing cracks, and flange face damage; Belzona 1212 handles fast-cure emergency repair where a planned outage isn't available. Belzona 1131 (Bearing Metal) traps and holds lubricating oil at start-up, where dry-friction wear is the dominant failure mode on heavy mill assets. For chutes, hoppers, and screw conveyors in slag and dust service, Belzona 1818 delivers abrasion resistance that outlasts unprotected carbon steel.

01Continuous casting ladle turret bearings

Continuous casting ladle turrets carry full ladles of molten steel — typically 500 tons each — on bearings that operate under cyclic load and high ambient temperature. When the bearing damages the shaft seat, conventional repair means a major outage and a machined sleeve. Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) is specified for this duty because the rebuild is done in situ, the cure is cold, and the repair returns the bearing seat to dimensional tolerance without removing the turret from service.

02Trunnion bearings, mill housings, and rolling mill wear plates

Trunnion bearing housings on rolling mills, drag chains, and reheating furnaces fail by a combination of erosion, fretting, and impact. Belzona 1111 rebuilds the housing geometry; for the wear face, Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) provides the harder, more abrasion-resistant top surface. Wear plates that have shifted or partially detached are re-secured with Belzona 4111 (Magma-Quartz) cold plate bonding, which holds under impact loading without welding.

03Chutes, hoppers, screw conveyors, and bulk-material handling

The dominant failure mode in bulk-material handling is abrasive wear at high impact angles, and the dominant economic constraint is that re-lining is usually scheduled around production downtime windows, not the other way round. Belzona 1818 is the abrasion-resistant epoxy specified into this duty — applied as a trowel-grade rebuild for severe wear, then optionally topcoated. The hot fuel and clinker conveyors at cement plants face a related duty profile; the same product family carries across.

04Pumps, slurry handling, and hydraulic equipment

Slurry pumps in steel mill water-handling and pickling-line service combine erosion-corrosion and chemical attack. Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) rebuilds the pump casing and impeller back to original profile; Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) restores the smooth, erosion-resistant face. For pickling-line containment, the 4000-series chemical-resistant coatings (4311, 4341) handle the acid-service chemistry on concrete substrates.

05Structural and mechanical: shaft keyways, alignment shims, machinery rebuild

Worn shaft keyways, distorted gearbox housings, and out-of-tolerance machinery alignment surfaces are rebuilt with cold-cure metal repair materials and finished to specification by hand. The repair window is short and the labour is on-site, which makes Belzona's product set economical against a machine-shop replacement that needs scheduling weeks out.
