Mechanical Power Transmission

Fretting wear on shaft sleeves, keyway ovality, spline backlash, and bearing-housing bore wear are the recurrent maintenance findings on mechanical power transmission components. Belzona's machinable repair composites rebuild the worn surface back to fit class without scrapping a long-lead-time shaft or housing.

What tends to go wrong
  • Fretting and corrosion wear on shaft sleeves, journal bearings, and bearing seats.
  • Keyway ovality from cyclic loading and corrosion.
  • Spline-tooth backlash on coupling hubs and gear shafts.
  • Bearing-housing bore wear on horizontally split and bolted-cap bearing assemblies.
  • Coupling-hub bore wear on press-fit and shrink-fit assemblies.
  • Lock-collar groove and snap-ring groove damage on shafts.
How Belzona helps

Why the rebuild beats the replacement

A worn shaft or bearing housing is often a long-lead-time spare. The unit is down, the OEM quote is six to twelve weeks, and the in-house maintenance shop has the geometry to rebuild and re-machine if the right material is available. Belzona's machinable composites are designed for that scope.

Belzona product families used on power transmission components

Shaft-sleeve and journal rebuild

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal), Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal), and Belzona 1131 (Bearing Metal) rebuild worn shaft sleeves and journal-bearing seats back to the original fit class. Cold-cured, machinable with conventional tooling, dimensional-stable to the bearing manufacturer's recommended interference fit.

Keyway and spline rebuild

Belzona 1111 fills the worn keyway and is machined back to the original keystock dimension. For splined hubs, the same family rebuilds the worn tooth flank profile; finish-machining returns the hub to the spline gauge tolerance.

Bearing-housing bore

Belzona 1111 and Belzona 1131 (Bearing Metal) rebuild oversize bearing-housing bores back to interference-fit dimension. The rebuilt bore is machined or honed to the bearing manufacturer's tolerance before the housing is reassembled.

Field versus shop application

Belzona Baton Rouge runs the rebuild in shop where the dimensional tolerance is tight and on site where the constraint is the time to remove and reinstall the component. Both paths use the same product family; the difference is in the surface preparation method and the post-cure machining setup.
