Why pumps fail before their design life
Pumps rarely fail from one mechanism. A typical centrifugal pump in process service sees cavitation at the impeller eye, abrasive wear on wear rings, and chemical attack on the casing all at once. The lining of small repeated pits accelerates as flow disturbance worsens, and efficiency drops well before the pump is taken out of service.
Belzona product families used on pump assets
Metal-loss rebuilding
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) is the standard paste for filling cavitation pits, rebuilding worn casing walls, and reforming damaged volute throats prior to coating. For higher-temperature or more severe erosion service, Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) rebuilds metal loss on impeller blades and casing internals and accepts a topcoat directly.
Erosion-corrosion protection
Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) is engineered for continuous immersion erosion-corrosion to 60°C (140°F). Belzona 1391T extends that envelope to elevated-temperature immersion, which is useful for hot-water pumps, condensate pumps, and process-water duty. Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide) is a low-friction efficiency coating used on impeller and casing flow surfaces to recover lost head and reduce energy draw on pumps that have been operating with worn internals.
Shaft and sleeve repair
Worn shaft grooves, keyways, and packing-box bores can be rebuilt with Belzona 1111 or 1311 and machined back to dimension. This avoids shaft replacement on pumps where the rotating element is on a long lead time.
When in-service repair beats replacement
Belzona systems are cold-cure and 100% solids, so a pump can be split, prepared, rebuilt, coated, and reassembled inside a planned outage without hot work permits or specialty fabrication. For pumps where the OEM replacement quote includes a long lead time on a casting, an in-situ rebuild typically returns the pump to design profile in a single shift.
Selecting between products
Choose Belzona 1111 when the substrate is clean carbon steel and the service is non-immersed or moderate-temperature. Step up to Belzona 1311 or 1321 when the service is continuous immersion or includes erosion-corrosion. Use Belzona 1341 as an efficiency topcoat once metal-loss rebuilding has restored profile. Belzona Baton Rouge selects products against the actual service file: pumped fluid, temperature, solids loading, and inspection interval.
