Pulp and paper combines high-temperature steam, aggressive black-liquor chemistry, and abrasive solids handling on continuous schedules where unplanned downtime is measured per-hour. Belzona's repair stack is engineered around the in-situ window: emergency rebuild on refiners and paper-machine assets, chemistry-resistant linings on digesters, and thermal-barrier coatings on exposed steam piping.
In a working pulp mill, the relevant question isn't whether a material adheres to a clean substrate — it's whether it cures correctly on a hot, wet, fiber-contaminated surface in the eight hours before the next shift starts feeding the digester.
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) and 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) rebuild refiner bodies, end covers, and pulp blender housings; 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) finishes the erosion-resistant wear face. For black liquor inside digesters and evaporator tube sheets, the 4000-series chemical-resistant coatings (4311, 4341) handle the chemistry. On exposed steam piping creating an operator burn hazard, Belzona 5871 brings touch-temperature inside acceptable limits without removing the asset from service.

Where Belzona systems get specified — open any area to dig in.
01Refiners, end covers, and pulp blender housings
Refiner bodies and end covers see severe erosion from the combination of fiber-laden flow and chemical attack. Where the wear has progressed to through-wall holes — the failure mode documented in Belzona Emergency Reclamation of a Refiner — the repair sequence is to rebuild with Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal), then top-coat with the erosion-resistant 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal). Service life on these in-situ rebuilds runs into multiple years, with the original case showing the repair still in serviceable condition after seven years and one intermediate touch-up.
02Paper machine sole plates and rolls
Paper machine sole plates carry the cyclic load of the dryer section and degrade by a combination of corrosion, vibration, and impact. Rebuilding in-place with Belzona 1111 and the 1131 (Bearing Metal) family avoids the alternative of removing and machining the sole plate — a multi-day operation in a continuous-production environment. Rolls with surface damage are returned to round with the same 1000-series rebuild, finished by hand to specification.
03Digesters, evaporators, and chemical recovery
Black liquor service combines aggressive chemistry with elevated temperature, and conventional general-purpose epoxies fail inside one operating cycle. The 4000-series chemical-resistant coatings (4311 Magma CR1 for ambient-temperature acid chemistry, 4341 Magma CR4 for mixed acid service with regulatory food-contact constraints) handle the bulk of the digester and evaporator service. Where temperature exceeds roughly 80°C in continuous immersion, the 1000-series ceramic coatings (1392 Ceramic HT2, 1593) take over from the 4000 series.
04Hog fuel handling and bulk-solids conveyors
Hog fuel screw conveyors, scrappers, and ash handling assets see the same abrasive wear duty profile as cement and steel mill bulk-handling equipment. Belzona 1818 is the abrasion-resistant epoxy specified into this service; the trowel-grade application makes the repair viable in confined access and around live components. Re-lining intervals are scheduled into mill turnarounds, with no welding required.
05Steam piping operator-safety and exposed thermal hazard
One repair category specific to pulp and paper is the operator-burn hazard on uninsulated steam piping. Belzona 5871 is engineered for this duty — applied directly to the operating pipe surface, it lowers the touch-temperature without de-rating the line, brings the asset inside operator-safety guidance, and survives steam-out and washdown cycles. The repair documented in the KHIA case Belzona 5871 Protects Steam Piping Hazardous to Operators walked through a four-section batch digester at a paper mill running at 200°F maximum.
06Live leak repair on sludge piping and chemical services
Live leak sealing on sludge piping, chemical washdown lines, and process drainage uses composite wraps from the chemical-resistant family — the same wrap chemistry used on chemical pipework, applied to the leak source under flow. The repair holds long enough to schedule the proper isolation without an emergency shutdown.
