Centrifugal Pump Rebuild & Efficiency Restoration
Cold-rebuilding an eroded pump casing and lining it to restore clearances, no new casting required.

The challenge
Cooling-water and process pumps move abrasive, corrosive fluid that slowly eats the casing, volute, and wear rings. As that metal is lost, internal running clearances open up and the hydraulic surface roughens. The pump moves less fluid for the same input, and the plant feels it as lost efficiency and a unit pulled from the rotating spares pool. The usual answer is a new casting, which is costly and often on a long lead time.
Our approach
We take the pump into the shop and assess where the metal has been lost. We blast the casing, volute, and wear ring areas back to clean substrate, then rebuild the worn metal cold with Belzona 1000 Series composites. We reform the internal profile to the original clearances and apply an erosion-resistant lining over the flow path. The result is a smooth hydraulic surface and tight clearances, ready to go back into service.
- Assess and measureWe inspect the casing, volute, and wear rings and map where erosion and corrosion have opened the internal clearances.
- Surface preparationWe grit-blast the worn areas back to a clean, profiled substrate so the repair materials bond properly.
- Cold metal rebuildWe rebuild the lost metal with Belzona 1000 Series composites, working cold so the casing sees no heat distortion.
- Reform and lineWe reform the internal profile to the original running clearances and apply an erosion-resistant lining across the flow path.
- Return to spares poolWe finish the hydraulic surfaces smooth and return the rebuilt pump to the plant's rotating spares pool.
The result
- Running clearances restored without replacing the casing
- Smooth hydraulic surface reformed across the eroded flow path
- Worn casting saved rather than scrapped, avoiding a new casting lead time
- Pump returned to the plant's rotating spares pool
